The importance of ‘atmospheric rivers’ to the climate

The “atmospheric rivers” or “flying rivers” are currents of water vapor in the atmosphere that move through the Amazon region and transport large amounts of fresh water from the Amazon basin to other regions of the South American continent, including the southeastern and southern region of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

Thus, the preservation of the Amazon forest is essential to maintain the ecological and climatic balance of the region and the continent as a whole, in addition to being vital for the maintenance of biodiversity and water resources in the region.
