Consequences of Donald Trump’s Climate Decisions

aquecimento global

In his 2025 inaugural address, U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled a series of measures aimed at rolling back much of the progress made in recent years on climate issues.

These measures include withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Agreement, resuming full-scale oil and gas exploration, cutting back environmental regulations, intensively exploiting Alaska’s reserves, and shutting down programs like the Green New Deal and incentives for transitioning to electric vehicles.

These actions represent a significant setback not just for the United States, but for global efforts to combat climate change.

Rising Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement deals a significant blow to global climate action. As one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters in the world, the country’s exit undermines international collaboration and sets a dangerous precedent for other nations that might follow suit and scale back their climate commitments.

The push to ramp up oil and gas exploration – including tapping into Alaska’s sensitive ecosystems – further worsens the problem. This approach not only increases domestic emissions but also accelerates global warming, jeopardizing goals like limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Impact on Global Efforts

The termination of the Green New Deal and incentives for transitioning to electric vehicles signals a return to reliance on fossil fuels. The U.S.’s leadership in the electric vehicle market could have played a critical role in accelerating the global shift to a low-carbon economy. Abandoning this area weakens global technological development and reduces incentives for other nations to invest in clean energy.

Environmental Consequences

Intensive exploitation of Alaska’s reserves poses a direct threat to biodiversity and Arctic ecosystems, which are already reeling from the accelerated melting of sea ice. The destruction of these ecosystems affects not only local wildlife but also undermines their role as global climate regulators.

Economic and Political Repercussions

These decisions also put the U.S. at odds with global trends favoring a transition to renewable and sustainable energy sources. In the long run, clinging to fossil fuels could harm American economic competitiveness, especially in a world increasingly governed by carbon markets and stricter environmental regulations.

On the diplomatic front, these actions could isolate the U.S., reducing its influence in climate negotiations and strengthening alliances between countries committed to decarbonization. The absence of American leadership on climate issues leaves room for China and the European Union to fill the void.

The Future of Climate Action

While Trump’s policies represent a step backward, they may also provoke counteractions at the state, local, and private levels.

Many American states, cities, and companies have already declared their intention to continue decarbonization efforts regardless of federal policies. This resistance serves as a reminder that, even in the face of setbacks, the fight against climate change must persist.

The world stands at a climate crossroads, and the decisions made today will shape the future for generations to come.

Donald Trump’s announced measures underscore the urgency of global collaboration and action to counteract these setbacks and secure a habitable planet for all.
